Wanted: DF6QC

[this site in german language]

In February 1951, I was born in Hörstel, near Münster, in Westphalia.

Since 1979 (with interruptions for prolonged periods of time) I live on the island of Heligoland and work at the local weather station of "Deutscher Wetterdienst". My wife Ute and my two sons Florian, born in 1994, and Julian, born in 1997, give me a lot of pleasure. My family (sometimes) show a lot of understanding for my hobby: amateur radio.

Thanks to the persevering patience of my elmers Erwin Zöller (DL3BE, theory) and Horst Reifig (DK9QR, CW), I was issued the call sign DF6QC in June 1975.

In 1978, I was employed as a weather service technician at "Deutscher Wetterdienst", and already one year after that, I activated the new club station DLØDWD, for which I am the licensee up to today.

In 1990, the Contest Working Group of Germany was founded on Heligoland, and I became the responsible operator for its club station, DFØIT.

Heligoland is a small island of about 0.9 sqkm in the North Sea with approx. 1,300 inhabitants.

Its history is very eventful: formerly being British, in 1890 it was given to the German Empire by the British in exchange for the African island of Zanzibar (5H1) and turned into a sea fortress during the two world wars. This lead to the result that the inhabitants had to leave their island during the wars. After World War II, the island was used as a tactical bombing target by the British RAF. In the largest non-nuclear blasting ever, the British tried to destroy the island with about 6,000 tons of explosives. But the island survived the "big bang" because of it special rock formation.

On March 1, 1952, Heligoland was returned to Germany and had to undergo complete reconstruction. According to old English vested right, Heligoland is a tax-free zone and thus a tourist attraction. On good summer days, there are more than 4,000 visitors on the island - most of them coming by ship from one of numerous harbors along the North Sea cost. The journey can also be carried out by plane which lands on the nearby Dune island.

It is not easy to be a radio amateur on Heligoland. The houses are small tightly trenched upon each other, so that there's not much room for antennas, resulting in TVI being a major problem. Strong winds with up to Beaufort 12 are not uncommon. Our island, the "red rock", is the only piece of land in Maidenhead field JO34 and our IOTA number EU-127 is very much in demand. Many XYLs, YLs and OM would like to get on the air from here. It is a pity that we must be low-keyed in this matter - but reasons given speak for themselves! The local hams are always the ones blamed for TVI and BCI...
